The Music that No One Could Tune Out
So, I'm riding the MTA subway to head to an ASCAP (American Association of Composers and Producers) meeting! On the way, there wee tons of delays on the "B" train due to a power outage with another train which held up many trains all at once! One could be perturbed at such a dilemma but as a Singer/ Songwriter in this inspirational city, I found lemonade in this lemon of a situation! There were 2 Black musicians
(Guy and Girl) classically trained playing a beautiful piece of Music at the Columbus Circle station! One would surmise that ANYONE playing in the subway stations would be uneducated, homeless or even hopeless... Just trying to get through their day! This was a different scene! She had on a beautiful floral dress and he wore a nice pair of pants and a buttoned down shirt with a tie... Not dapper or statement making, just respectful to the art they were displaying! The sound they created was welcomed given the stress of the situation! There were dozens of passengers looking to get home after a long day of work... Mothers with crying babies trying to find safety from the germs of so many people in one place... Businessmen trying to keep their upstanding profile... People just trying to get somewhere! In the midst of the chaos, I found peace in knowing that for the Musicians playing, it was a blessing to have people "stuck" for so long! They could have literally played an entire set of Music without repeating due to this MTA Transit mishap! Usually high turnover and frequency of a subway transit could having you loop 3 songs all day and never repeating to the same crowd! It was a blessing because people were forced to stay a listen to something that could be the elixir for what ailed them at the moment... Classical Music! I'm SURE that the Musicians made some descent money as well given the quality of Music they were communicating and the attention of onlookers having very fews choices to do anything else! As they say, "In a New York minute"! Well in this case, it was a little longer than a minute... More like and hour! Timing is everything, I'm told... and THIS was their time! New York has so many facets that makes it the most amazing city in the world! This was one of my reasons why!
What's YOUR New York experience that makes you say "I Love New York"?
